We’ve Been Busy, New Sharpening Steels

We’ve Been Busy at TTK – Check Out Our New Sharpening Steels

We’re excited to share some great news from Tassie Tiger Knives – we’ve just launched our very own range of knife sharpening steels!

Whether you’re in a professional kitchen, out in the bush, or just keeping things sharp at home, these new tools are designed to make your life easier and your knives keener. After plenty of field use and firsthand frustration with losing gear mid-task, we’ve added some thoughtful touches to our designs. Here’s what’s new:

Two Models, Built for Everyday Use

We’ve released two models to suit different preferences:

Both are medium/regular cut steels, perfect for daily maintenance and suited for:

Designed with the Field in Mind

If you’ve ever been out field dressing and had your sharpening steel vanish into the undergrowth, you’ll appreciate this:
Our round model has an orange handle, and the oval model features a red handle—high visibility, so you can find them quickly when you need them most. We’ve all been there, hunting around (literally) for that steel you just had in your hand.

What Do Sharpening Steels Actually Do?

Sharpening steels, also called honing steels, aren’t for grinding down your blade like a whetstone. Instead, they:

  • Realign your blade’s edge – over time, a knife’s edge bends microscopically during use. A steel straightens those tiny teeth, restoring cutting performance.
  • Maintain sharpness between sharpening – with regular use, a steel keeps your edge keen longer, reducing the need for full resharpening.
  • Get you back to work quickly – just a few strokes and you’re good to go.

A Closer Look:

  • Edge Refinement: Sharpening steels re-align the edge rather than remove material, making them ideal for everyday maintenance.
  • Not for Severely Dull Blades: If your knife is completely blunt, you’ll need a whetstone or other sharpening method.
  • Types of Steels: While round is most common, flat/oval options give you a larger contact area. Materials like ceramic or diamond also offer different abrasiveness levels.
  • How to Use: Maintain a 20-degree angle, alternate sides, and use gentle, consistent strokes. It only takes a few passes to get that edge back in shape.

Final Thoughts
